The ideal lathe should be chosen according to its intended use. For a hobbyist lathe, a power output of 300 to 500 watts will suffice. As a general rule, large workpieces require a lower speed of approximately 500 to 1000 rpm, while small workpieces require a higher speed of up to 3000 rpm for clean, smooth results.
